My Father

My Father

Is it me?
Or am I just growing older?
Or is the world outside growing slowly colder?

We drink and waste
So many years
But there’s always tomorrow so who really cares?

You bite your lip
Tolerate everyone else
But come to that, you never cared much for yourself

Why are we all blind until the demise?
Why is it only then we finally realise?
There was so much I wanted to say but I was choked by foolish pride I want to be good, I want to be wise
I hope you know Dad
I see you every time I look into my own son’s eyes

Unaware of this
World’s cruel wickedness
A child’s unconditional love, their innocence

Father, you were my hero from the start You always had the answers
You always had the heart

But by the time
The circle comes fully around again
Its always too late to become the best of friends

Why are we all blind until the demise?
Why is it only then we finally realise?
There was so much I wanted to say but I was choked by foolish pride I want to be good, I want to be wise
I hope you know Dad
I see you every time I look into my own son’s eyes
